History of Medieval studies
Given that the FEF was founded on the principle of preserving and promoting its archival bequest, it is natural that the Foundation also advances thinking and reflection on the discipline of medieval studies in Italy as well as in Europe.
A large part of the research and publications of the FEF in this sector is related to those who played a central role in medieval studies in Italy in the 20th century, starting with Ezio Franceschini and Gianfranco Contini, and to the reconstruction of their activities and pursuits through the archival material - including papers and correspondence, with the publication of unpublished works and documents.
A proposal to broaden this work to encompass the European perspective, with the collection «L’Europe des philologues. Correspondances», is supported by the Collège de France and directed by Michel Zink. The object of this collection is to publish epistolary exchanges between the founders of medieval philology in the 19th and 20th centuries.
